3 Sources of Environmental Aging and Skin Damage

3 Sources of Environmental Aging and Skin Damage

Experts from Eminence Organics are here to explain how environmental aggressors can speed up the aging process and what you can do to prevent that.

Getting older is a fact of life. As we age, our bodies’ biological processes naturally slow, and over time, the effects emerge on our faces. Collagen and elastin deplete, dark spots materialize and fine lines and wrinkles begin to set in. To compound matters, everyday stressors also contribute to– and even accelerate– a mature complexion. Here are three sources of environmental aging and how you can minimize the look of skin damage.

Pollution

Urban living is a key culprit of the visible signs of aging. Every day, we come into contact with particulate matter that takes a toll on our complexions. The toxins and free radicals we are exposed to actively bind to structural proteins (like collagen and elastin), breaking them down and interrupting their production. These weakened proteins lose their ability to keep skin taut and wrinkle-free, leading to a more weathered looking complexion.

Blue Light

Blue light (the light that emits from our electronic devices) also adds to premature skin aging. Long term exposure to blue light has been shown to contribute to a break down in collagen and elastin, as well as the emergence of dark spots and inflammation. With US adults spending upwards of eleven hours a day on their devices, it’s no wonder that we’ve begun to see the visible signs of exposure on our faces.

UV Exposure

Sun exposure plays a major role in aging our complexions. UV rays penetrate deep within the skin, exposing otherwise healthy cells to damaging free radicals. These highly reactive molecules accelerate the aging process by inhibiting collagen production and causing malformed elastin. Additionally, environmental stress from sun exposure triggers the skin to protect itself by producing more melanin, which leads to the emergence of age and sun spots.

Mineral Sun Protection

Both products in this new and innovative collection from Eminence Organics Skin Care include non-nano, mineral sun protection. Unlike chemical formulations which change UV rays into heat, natural compounds like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide shield skin from the sun’s rays by reflecting them upon contact. The result: A reef-safe solution that is better for your skin and the environment.
