Bad Skin Habits You Need to Break

Bad Skin Habits You Need to Break

A daily skin care routine is important. The right products can help prevent premature signs of aging, damage and even skin cancer. There are some bad skin habits, however, that do more harm than good. Follow these healthy skin care tips for a more youthful and radiant complexion.

Smoking and chewing gum

Smoking and chewing gum are both bad skin habits that can lead to wrinkles. We all know smoking takes a toll on the complexion, but many people don’t realize how much. Smoking is the most common cause of wrinkles around the mouth, often called smoker’s lines. Chewing gum can also lead to wrinkles around the mouth, as well as create other issues in the mouth structure. Breaking these habits will help prevent premature lines and other signs of aging.

Popping pimples

Picking at your skin may not seem harmful but the effects can last for months or years. A regular zit only lasts about a week while the redness, inflammation, hyperpigmentation and scarring that follow a popped pimple last much longer. The best way to avoid this bad skin habit is to establish a “hands off” rule. Apply an acne treatment product to the affected area and then don’t touch it. If your acne doesn’t disappear on its own, it may be time to visit a dermatologist to discuss stronger treatment options.

Over exfoliating

Exfoliating can do wonders for your complexion. Too much exfoliation, however, never gives the skin a chance to heal. As a result, dry skin becomes drier and oily skin produces excess oil. You should also avoid cleansing with a washcloth. This is very irritating to the skin and ends up causing dry areas and even sores. Additionally, washcloths frequently harbor bacteria that make the face break out even more. Instead, exfoliate once or twice a week with a gentle scrub like NIA24 Physical Cleansing Scrub. For those who prefer daily exfoliation, Clarisonic Aria Skin Cleansing System is gentle enough to use twice a day.

Skipping sunscreen

Another mistake people often make is not applying enough sunscreen. Rain or shine, inside or out, daily sun protection is important. Even a few minutes of sun exposure can lead to a breakdown of collagen, creating fine lines and wrinkles. A good rule of thumb is to apply a nickel-size amount to the face and two tablespoons (about enough to fill a shot glass) to the body. Reapplying every two hours is important, especially if you’re spending the day outside. We recommend a broad spectrum formula like EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen, which has a lightweight, oil-free formula that won’t clog pores.

Licking your lips

Dry lips are uncomfortable, but licking your lips is not the best solution. Saliva dries quickly, taking any natural moisture with it. The result is dry, cracked and chapped skin. Treat and heal chapped lips with FixMySkin Healing Balm with 1% Hydrocortisone. This unique formula works to soothe chapped lips, psoriasis, eczema, insect bites, poison ivy, seborrheic dermatitis and allergic skin reactions to cosmetics and other products. The hydrocortisone in this medicated balm has chemical properties that go beyond moisturizing to relieve itching and heal the skin. Additionally, a unique combination of natural waxes allows the balm to remain solid even when warm.

Sleeping in your makeup

Finally, sleeping in your makeup can cause premature signs of aging. The cosmetics, oil and environmental pollutants that gather on your face all day seep into your pores while you sleep, causing breakouts and speeding up the aging process. Cleansing every night is so important because your complexion naturally heals itself while you’re asleep. If you’re prone to forgetting after a long day, keep makeup remover wipes on your nightstand as a gentle reminder.
