What does hyaluronic acid do?

What does hyaluronic acid do?

Whether it’s emblazoned on lotion labels or touted in cleanser commercials, you’ve likely noticed the popularity of hyaluronic acid. In skin care, hyaluronic acid is a go-to ingredient in a variety of products, but why is it so ubiquitous? With the help of board-certified dermatologist and LovelySkin CEO Dr. Joel Schlessinger, we’ll help you understand the function of hyaluronic acid and the benefits it can bring to your skin. Follow along as we answer questions such as:

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body makes naturally. The greatest concentrations of hyaluronic acid are found in your joints—where it helps provide cushioning between bones—as well as your eyes and skin. “Hyaluronic acid is a fantastic moisturizer due to the way it attracts water. This happens inside your cells and wherever it is applied, which makes it a refreshing and rejuvenating product. Inside your skin cells, hyaluronic acid does some very important jobs,” Dr. Schlessinger says. “It helps balance oil production and maintain hydration, which helps keep your skin looking smooth and plump.”

What does hyaluronic acid do for skin?

Hyaluronic acid works hard inside your body, but when it is applied to your skin topically, it acts as a humectant to bind moisture (water molecules) in dehydrated skin. “Our bodies actually produce less hyaluronic acid as we age,” Dr. Schlessinger says. “Lower hyaluronic acid levels cause your skin to lose its natural moisture and elasticity, which can make fine lines and wrinkles look more prominent.” Hyaluronic acid production actually starts to decline as early as age twenty and is halved by age fifty.

Because of its superior hydrating properties, hyaluronic acid is a popular ingredient in skin care products ranging from body lotions to facial moisturizers to lip balms. Most hyaluronic acid used in skin care products is made in a lab using a process called biofermentation.

When you apply hyaluronic acid to moist skin, it helps hydrate your skin by binding water inside your cells. “Up on the surface, this can result in skin that temporarily looks firmer, smoother and more youthful. Fine lines also look less noticeable,” Dr. Schlessinger says.

When should you apply hyaluronic acid?

“Hyaluronic acid is the most effective when your skin is moist and it has the chance to completely absorb into your skin,” Dr. Schlessinger says. For this reason, skin care products that you apply after cleansing—such as serums, moisturizers, eye creams or ampoules—are a great choice.

What skin care products have hyaluronic acid in them?

A wide variety of skin care products feature hyaluronic acid to help boost your skin’s hydration and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Here are nine of our go-to products featuring hyaluronic acid, from nourishing facial serums to eye creams and plumping lip gloss.

LovelySkin LUXE HA Peptide Serum

LovelySkin LUXE HA Peptide Serum

From Dr. Schlessinger’s own LovelySkin LUXE line, this anti-aging serum combines the hydrating properties of hyaluronic acid with growth factor-derived peptides to help repair cellular damage caused by environmental stress and aging. Together with Persian silk tree extract and apple stem cells, these ingredients work together to help support collagen production and more radiant-looking skin.

These benefits are a result of SkinMedica’s finely tuned formula featuring a proprietary blend of five types of hyaluronic acid that not only increase your skin’s hydration temporarily, but also support your skin’s ability to make its own hyaluronic acid.
