What is Keratosis Pilaris, and How Do I Get Rid of These Bumps on My Arms, Face and Legs?

What is Keratosis Pilaris, and How Do I Get Rid of These Bumps on My Arms, Face and Legs?

If you have noticed tiny, painless bumps on your skin, it might be a common condition called keratosis pilaris, also called chicken skin or KP for short.

“Keratosis pilaris occurs when keratin, a protective protein in the skin’s outermost layer, builds up and blocks hair follicles,” says board-certified dermatologist and LovelySkin CEO Dr. Joel Schlessinger. “This results in tiny bumps that form rough, scaly patches. They can vary in color, so they might look white, red or the same hue as your skin. The good news is that KP tends to improve as an adult in your 20s, though some people can still have it in their early 30s. It is passed down via genes and if you have one parent with it, there is a good chance you may inherit it as it is an autosomal dominant trait.”

Keratosis pilaris can develop anywhere on your body with hair follicles, but it’s most commonly found on the upper arms, thighs and sometimes the face. Because it can also flare up when the humidity is lower and the skin becomes drier overall, it can be more of an issue in the fall and winter.

How do I get rid of keratosis pilaris?

Though there’s no cure, you can often improve the appearance of KP with the right exfoliating and moisturizing products. Formulas with urea, lactic acid, glycolic acid and salicylic acid can be either prescribed by a dermatologist or found in over-the-counter products like those below.

Neostrata Restore Bionic Lotion

Neostrata Restore Bionic Lotion

This restorative lotion treats keratosis pilaris on both the face and body. It helps dissolve the keratin that causes KP with two exfoliating acids (3% lactobionic acid and 12% gluconolactone) and moisturizes with vitamin E and meadowfoam seed oil. It also makes a fantastic all-around treatment for itchiness, dry skin and rough patches.

GlyDerm Hand & Body Lotion 10%

GlyDerm Hand & Body Lotion 10%

Smooth bumps with this exfoliating body lotion powered by 10% glycolic acid derived from sugar cane. Mineral oil and petrolatum also work together to lock in moisture to prevent future KP flare-ups. It has a lightweight texture that sinks into the skin quickly, and it can also be used on the hands to help smooth rough patches on the palms or knuckles.

AFA Advanced Body Lotion

AFA Advanced Body Lotion

This body lotion is designed to be used as a spot treatment, so you can apply it directly to the areas KP has popped up. The formula gently exfoliates with afaLUXE, a blend of amino-based antioxidants. It also contains Dead Sea minerals and L-ascorbic acid to help brighten dark spots and revitalize the skin.

This facial treatment also contains afaLUXE, making it an effective treatment for keratosis pilaris on the face. While afaLUXE helps remove the dead skin cells that contribute to KP, vitamin C and Dead Sea minerals improve collagen production to promote younger-looking skin.

Obagi Medical KeraPhine Body Smoothing Lotion

Obagi Medical KeraPhine Body Smoothing Lotion

This body lotion contains 15% glycolic acid paired with 5% ammonium lactate to help exfoliate the skin while glycerin acts as a moisturizer. With daily application, it helps reduce the bumpy, rough appearance of keratosis pilaris on your arms, legs or elsewhere on your body.

Glytone KP Kit

If you suffer from body acne in addition to keratosis pilaris, this two-step treatment provides all you need to keep both conditions at bay and achieve clearer, smoother skin all over your body. First, use the included shower pouf to apply the glycolic acid-powered body wash to the affected areas. Finish the treatment by applying the body lotion for a second dose of exfoliating glycolic acid.

Avene Akerat Smoothing Exfoliating Cream for Body

Avene Akerat Smoothing Exfoliating Cream for Body

This body cream employs a trio of active ingredients—salicylic acid, lactic acid and urea—that work together to smooth and moisturize. In addition to helping smooth keratosis pilaris, it also helps soften other rough spots, such as dry heels, knees and elbows.
