If you like to buy organic when possible at the grocery store, you might be wondering if shopping organic is also important when it comes to makeup. Organic beauty is a growing category in the cosmetics market, so there are plenty of opportunities to shop organic when it comes to selecting your next mascara, blush or lipstick. However, before you do, let’s answer some questions you might have about organic beauty, including:
What is organic?
The word “organic” indicates that a product or its ingredients are grown without using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Organic farming is an increasingly appreciated practice because it has many environmental benefits over conventional farming, including supporting biodiversity and cutting down on pollution.
What does organic cosmetics mean?
What is organic beauty? As it turns out, the FDA does not define or regulate what the word “organic” means as it pertains to cosmetics. However, if a cosmetic product is made of agricultural ingredients—that is, ingredients derived from fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts or other plants—the USDA has set some parameters for how the word “organic” can be used on labeling for cosmetic and beauty products.
Cosmetics companies can use the USDA’s organic seal on makeup if the products have anywhere from 95% to 100% organic ingredients. If at least 70 percent of the ingredients use in a formula are organic, the USDA allows cosmetics to be labeled “made with organic ingredients.”
Makeup products that are made from ingredients that are less than 70% organic can’t be labeled as organic. However, the ingredient list may include identification of single ingredients that are organic, which may be the case for a foundation made with organic jojoba oil or a lip gloss made with organic peppermint extract.
Ecocert is another certifying body that grants organic certifications for cosmetics that meet certain criteria. In order to be labeled with the Ecocert Organic Cosmetic seal, at least 95% of the plant material a beauty product contains must be organic.
Why should I try organic cosmetics?
“I definitely like the idea of organic ingredients in cosmetics when sourced responsibly, but there is always the challenge of finding brands that do what they say they do,” says board-certified dermatologist and LovelySkin CEO Dr. Joel Schlessinger. “We carefully evaluate the brands that we carry and trust the purity of their ingredients and the quality of their products, but we also verify this in many ways.” In addition, if supporting organic farming is important to you, one way you can support that cause is by purchasing organic cosmetics and beauty products.
