Is heat protectant necessary when heat styling hair?

When it comes to hair care, there’s an entire category of products—sprays, serums, lotions, you name it—that claim to provide your hair with protection from heat tools such as blow dryers, curling irons and straighteners. However, styling your hair can be time-consuming enough as it is. Is this extra step really necessary? We’ll dig into this topic by answering questions such as:

Is heat protectant necessary?

“I would absolutely recommend using a heat protectant when styling your hair with heat tools,” says LovelySkin CEO Dr. Joel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon. “Heating up your hair alters the structure of proteins in each strand, which is what allows you to achieve the results you’re looking for—hair that’s straightened or curled, for example. That said, the heat also damages the outer cuticle of your hair, which can result in hair that looks dull, tangles easily and feels rough to the touch.”

What does heat protectant do?

Heat protectants provide a physical barrier between your hair and the high heat of styling tools to help minimize damage. “The only way to prevent heat damage entirely is to avoid heat styling all together, but heat protectants can help reduce damage by acting as a shield,” says LovelySkin Medical Director Dr. Daniel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist as well as Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon.

How does heat protectant work?

Heat protectant products for your hair come in many forms—spray liquids, lotions, serums, gels—and they contain ingredients that coat your hair to reduce the heat that penetrates into each strand. Some heat protectant products—usually called blow-dry aids or accelerators— help your hair dry faster so that you are exposing your hair to heat for a shorter amount of time.

The best products to protect your hair from heat damage

Color Wow Speed Dry Blow-Dry Spray

Color Wow Speed Dry Blow-Dry Spray

This innovative spray is an intermediate step between washing and styling your hair that will help cut down on your total time spent blow drying. After shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying your hair, you’ll spray on this product and comb it through.

Next, you can apply your favorite usual styling products and begin blow-drying. While some blow-dry accelerators use alcohol to evaporate water from your hair, which can be dehydrating as a result, this alcohol-free formula features a polymer technology that acts like shrink wrap to squeeze water out of your hair.

The result? A 30% reduction in dry time without causing damage or dehydration. It works well for all hair types and is especially intended for very long or very thick hair that is typically time-consuming to blow dry.

Simply spritz it onto your dry or damp hair section by section as you style your hair with a heat iron or rollers. In addition to acting as a heat protectant, it also provides strong hold and shape memory to keep your style in place throughout the day.
