This stuff is real-deal. It's not a gentle scrub. However, YOU determine how gentle or how aggressive this scrub is by how you use it. I get tired of ordering "scrubs" and finding they really don't do much more than a regular cleanser so this was a refreshing change. Yes, we should be gentle with our skin, but sometimes we just need to get in there and clear the gunk away. Not so much for me, but my 16-year-old daughter struggling with acne. She uses this about once weekly and expecially when it's needed right before getting her period. I use it (more gently) to clear away dead skin after using my retinol that makes me a littly peely. The scent is light and pleasant. Rinses nicely. Really, a nice product if you use it well.
