I had been using a brush from a different brand that worked well, but I feel this brush works better with Jane Iredale products. It does does not pick up as much powder when swirled in the compact, which in my opinion allows you to apply the foundation more evenly, even though you do have to put on a few more layers. The result is more even coverage.
