Protect yourself by learning the different types of skin cancer from Joel Schlessinger MD.
As a board-certified dermatologist, Joel Schlessinger MD has seen firsthand how the number of individuals with skin cancer has increased during recent years. Each month, Joel Schlessinger MD visits with men and women of all ages and skin tones who are dealing with this issue. In this video, he explains the differences between the most common types of skin cancer and how you can protect yourself against this disease.
There are three types of skin cancer that dermatologists commonly see. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form and it is also the most easily treatable. There is also a low risk of complications with this type. Squamous cell carcinoma is slightly more problematic because there is a risk, although very low, of this type of cancer spreading throughout the body. Melanoma, the most dangerous type, is the deadliest form of skin cancer and is found in one in 40 individuals. This issue must be caught very early in order to successfully reduce the risk of spreading.
All of these types of skin cancer are caused by exposure to the sun and UV light. To protect yourself against the risk of developing this disease, wear a sunscreen daily and reapply when you are exposed to the sun for more than two hours. Joel Schlessinger MD also recommends avoiding the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the UV rays are the strongest.
