I took a chance and tried this Avene RetrinAL 0.1 since it is in between 2 strengths of another retinaldehyde line I normally use. This product did not cause any bad reaction on my sensitive, mature skin. I use it in conjunction with Avene Tolerance cream, but it did make my skin's outer layer look more dehydrated than I had expected. I already have dry skin and have been using another companies line of retinaldehydes and serums for 7 months with success. This Avene formulation may be better for someone with combination skin, thicker skin or more conditioned skin than my own. I give it 5 stars because for being a stronger retinaldehyde product, it still is what I would consider very gentle, all things considered. If new to retinaldehydes, always start with the lower % and work up to the .1 over time.

I developed a particularly nasty case of papulopustular rosacea in my early 40s. Oral antibiotics helped, but I could only take them for a few months at a time and the condition rebounded with a vengeance. Rx Renital made my skin raw, Finacea did nothing at all. Even 8 months of Isolaz treatments had only a modest, temporary impact. After that, my doctor put me on a regimen of Metrogel with EltaMD foaming face wash, which made my face raw and sensitive, and I resigned that my condition would never improve. A few years later I got my first facial and I was introduced to the Avene line of products. Oh, what a difference the right products can make. Because my skin was so dry and sensitive, I had to start with the RetrinAL 0.5 concentration and work my way up to the 0.1. My skin used to be purple...yes purple, across my cheeks, and had an almost alligator-like appearance across my forehead. After using Avene for couple of years, my skin is soft, and the redness has diminished so much that I can get away with wearing just tinted sunscreen like I did before rosacea. Whenever a pustule erupts (and now even they are few and far between), I just dab an extra bit of RenrinAL 0.1 on it and it dries up in a few days (as opposed to the months it took before). I love this stuff.
